Flash Fiction: Bars – A Surreal Story of Sand and Solitude
Experience the depth of surreal storytelling in 'Bars: A Surreal Story of Sand and Solitude,' where the boundaries of reality and imagination blur.

From behind the bars overlooking the desert, he imagined the ocean and let a handful of sand dance beneath his fingers as if it were beach sand. A gust of wind blew dust from the desert onto his face. He coughed, turned his face away, and wished that this window had glass or a curtain to draw when the wind blew so fiercely, so that at least the dust wouldn't choke him. He reached for the bars to try once more to pull them out of the ground, but it seemed as though they had rooted deep into the earth, their feet clasping underground fissures so tightly that no human could uproot them.

They knew well that in this absolute desert, if anyone tried to steal them, there would be no one to save them. On the other hand, these ten steel bars had stood together since they had opened their eyes, warmed by each other's presence. He gripped one of the bars tighter and used his bare foot as a lever on the ground to pull one of the bars out with more force. Just then, the sun, in a frantic effort to stop this relentless attempt to break the unity among old friends, intensified its rays and blinded him. The man, overwhelmed by the intense sunlight, released his grip and covered his eyes with his forearm. He felt defeated and crawled back from the bars onto the ground. He left the room; the village had been abandoned for years. Most of the houses were buried under the sand, but occasionally, some houses could be found with their roofs still ten inches above ground. The man turned and thought about losing the people around him. Perhaps from the beginning, he shouldn't have clung to the vertical steel bars behind the window.
