What is Collage?
Collage or the so-called “art of cutting and pasting” is a term derived from a French word. In this form of art, the artist makes an artwork by sticking and combining many materials and objects on a surface to come up with a perfected piece of work. Collage may be used for both the technique used in creating artworks by sticking little pieces of materials onto a surface and the resulting artwork itself. This art utilizes everything simple and readily available-even fabrics, newspapers, photo fragments, colored papers, and even recyclable trash. Collage is basically the art of combining textures and images into a new concept. It is a play of ideas combined with materials to create a still-life masterpiece. Imagine the process of choosing pieces from magazines, photos, or whatever material you can imagine, creating a story or conveying emotion. That magic glue does the trick in collage.
The Nature and Uses of Collage Art
Collage is an art technique with the help of which social and cultural events are interpreted, usually showing surreal worlds. Here, the artist merges his subjective principles and skills of design to produce an unique and meaningful image.
Origins of Collage Art
This art has become an important and creative subject which is taught at every level of age, starting from preschool to university, and has gained a huge popularity in current times.
Actually, this art combines different trends along with the mind and goes forward with the progress of painting and design rules. You perhaps know that the first who applied collage in his works was Henri Matisse. When he had grown older and couldn’t paint anymore, Matisse started cutting small pieces from different attractive images and built from them his works. With time, it was adopted and spread. Very often, collage is considered some very ancient technique worked out with a modern twist.
The term initially described the innovations of Cubist artists like Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, who in 1912 started pasting pieces of newspaper and other materials onto their canvases. Since then, artists have taken this technique and combined and glued pieces from their surroundings in unexpected ways that have transformed them.

Indeed, one National Galleries of Scotland exhibition in Edinburgh noted that collage is, in fact, a good deal older than traditional art history. Japanese artists started pasting paper onto silk as early as 1100 AD. In Europe, paper collages were documented in the 1400s and had become a popular hobby by the Victorian era, appearing in home albums and Valentine’s Day cards.
Types of Collage
1- Paper Collages
It is a jigsaw-like collage, composed of pieces of paper. A person cuts the paper and puts the pieces together to form the picture or design, using glue to keep everything in its place. It is as if one is making a stunning paper mosaic. Many great artists, like Henri Matisse, have created marvelous paper collages.
- Newspaper Collage: A collage is made with bits of newspaper in this technique.
- Colored Paper Collage: This involves glueing cut pieces of colored cardboard together.

The artist draws on colored sheets and then cuts them by hand or with scissors. To do the cut-and-paste or collage technique to the best effect, try visualizing doing a landscape with the sky, mountains, and trees. Start with the furthest object-the sky-and work your way forward, placing each in place. Information like sun, clouds, and mountains would follow. The more details you add, the more beautiful and catchy your work gets.
2- Digital Collages
These collages are made on computers. Instead of scissors and glue, artists cut and paste digital images and graphics with the use of software. Photos, paintings, and even text can be combined together to make a digital masterpiece.
3- Mixed Media Collages

This type of collage involves the mixing of various materials. It is composed of materials such as paint, fabric, buttons, and many others, which make it a unique piece of artwork. It is for this reason that artists such as Robert Rauschenberg are known because of their mixed media works.
- Recycled Materials Collage: This technique is very different from all the others; in this type, the artist does not design or even use ready-made photos or drawings on the fabric. The conceptualization and creation of their desired things are made by the artist using residual and recycled materials. For example, a button can be used for an eye or a cup for a flowerpot.
- Fabric Collage: It is the technique in which the artist proposes his ideas on fabric, cuts them into smaller pieces, and sticks those onto the surface of paper.
The more variation in fabrics, the more creative and breathtaking the collage will be. The more open-minded and creative the artist is, the better he can use various patterns of fabrics. Whereas floral patterns would be only ok for a garden; brick or plaid patterns would go on the walls of a house.
4- Photo-Montage Collages
In this kind of collage, photographs are used as the base element. To form an image artists cut and paste photos often telling a story with them. Even famous artists like David Hockney have also used photo-montage collages remarkably.
How to Make a Collage

Making a collage is somewhat like piecing together a puzzle, and most artists would carry out the following steps:
1- Conceptualize and Plan – Think about what your collage is to represent. Visualize your idea and select the materials to be used. It’s like having a map in front of you before embarking on a journey.
2- Preparation consists of assembling all your materials-paper, photographs, fabric, or whatever material you will use. Just as in cooking, you first prepare all the ingredients that you will need.
3- Laying out and pasting of the elements: Now, this is the most fun thing to do! You arrange materials on canvas or paper, moving them around until you feel satisfied with the positions, and then glue them on. Just like doing a jigsaw puzzle.
4- Finishing touches: The final detail that would make your piece stand out, adds flavor to the main course.
The important key to success in collage is letting your creativity shine. Don’t be afraid to try new things, also experiment with different materials. Sometimes, the most unexpected combinations can lead to the most amazing results. Think of collage as your artistic playground where you’re free to explore and have fun.
Notable Collage Artists
Picasso and Georges Braque: The originators of Cubism tried to introduce collage in the early 1900s using materials such as printed cloths, pieces of newspaper cutouts, and patterned papers.
Laszlo Antal: He began recording his life as a series of little narrative collages from 2017 onwards. It is through collage that Antal wants to research and understand memory and its unreliability.
Robert Rauschenberg: From 1962 to 1964, he combined media images with painting movements in his collages.
Rhea Patricia Reeder: Her collages combine analog and digital techniques to create a unique visual poetry, which she calls “scannograms.”
Lola Dupre: Based near Glasgow, Scotland, Dupre’s hand-cut collages feature intricate, repeated patterns that render familiar subjects strange and anew.
Collage in Photography
Collage in photography involves layering photo pieces, fabric, colored papers, textures, and other mixed materials. It is mainly a process dealing with selection of materials, cutting those materials into desired shapes, and laying and pasting them on any chosen surface.
Importance of Collage for Children: Collage is one of the most essential activities done for preschool children. It enhances the reasoning, creativity, imagination, and problem-solving skills in them. It helps strengthen their motor skills and hand-to-eye coordination. It also allows children to express their feelings, thoughts, and wants through creative forms.
